Our senior footballers suffered a 2-point defeat to Monaleen on Wednesday evening in Caherelly. We got off to a blistering start with Evan Egan burying a goal inside the opening 5 minutes. We traded points over the following minutes before our opponents were awarded a 21 yard free for us allegedly not having 4 back. The referee was mistaken on this occasion but doubly penalized us for protesting from the line. After Monaleen scored the free, he duly awarded them a second free straight after. This was also converted. We went from an attacking position to conceding 2 points all in the one play.

We responded well to the setback with the winning of a penalty at the other end. Ralph picked up the ball at midfield and raced towards goal, being dragged down inside the penalty area. Unfortunately for Ralph, and for us, he sustained a hamstring injury when fouled and had to be withdrawn. Kieran Daly converted the resultant penalty. We entered half time leading 2-04 to 0-08.

Monaleen got on top in the second half, scoring 2 goals. We fought hard to stay in touch, seeing an improvement in our performance at midfield along with a great long range 2-pointer from Evan Egan. Monaleen would run out 2-point victors in the end.

The loss brings our 2025 football league campaign to a close in what were a highly fruitful series of games for the sky blues. The league saw us blood a handful of talented young lads and get well needed minutes into our more seasoned campaigners. Manager Timmy and co will no doubt have the boys in flying form again come the first round of championship against Oola, fixed for the weekend of the 20th of June. We wish him, his management and all the players the best over the coming weeks.

We had a 7-point win over the Well last Thursday evening in the City Semi-final played in Clarina. We now look forward to a City Final against Monaleen, to be fixed for later this week.
