Senior Hurling Championship Round 5
Na Piarsaigh 2-26
Patrickswell 2-14
A 12-point win for our senior hurlers in what was a dead rubber game with Patrickswell on Saturday afternoon in Claughaun. We had already guaranteed our place in the county semi-final while the Well’s relegation to senior B had also been cemented prior to Saturday’s game.
We flew out of the traps early, Peter Casey and Adrian Breen scoring a goal and a point each inside the opening 7 minutes. The Well responded to those two goals with two of their own in the following 5 minute period. We kept the scoreboard ticking though and slowly built some daylight between the sides. Things got heated just before the break following some hard challenges that went unpunished by the referee. Unfortunately, Peter Casey was to get the brunt of this as he took a heavy blow to the head as he went to rise a ball. The Patrickswell man was issued a red card but it possibly could have been avoided had some disciplinary action been taken sooner. We led 2-13 to 2-06 at half time.
We matched our first half tally of 13 points, with another 13 in the second half. Wayne opened the scoring to get his second of the day with Dylan Lynch adding 2 of his own. Will Henn slotted 8 frees for the day along with a point from play, while Mike Foley would land 2 from wing back. Adrian ended the game with 1-07 to his name, along with scooping the man of the match award. JJ Carey didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet but was immense from start to finish. His workrate both in attack and defense has been impeccable in the championship to date.
Our semi-final is due to be played on the weekend of the 4th of October. Shane Dowling sat out Saturday’s game due to a knock but should be back fit for the knock-out stage.

Intermediate Hurling Championship Round 5
Na Piarsaigh 1-15
Knockainey 1-14
Our intermediate hurlers had a huge win on Sunday afternoon in Bruff, beating Knockainey by the slimmest of margins and securing our place in the knockout stages of this year's championship. We played the first half with the benefit of a monster gale but possibly didn’t take full advantage, leading 9 points to 5 at the break. Marcus Hogan landed 2 lovely points, while Deano got struck one over from his weaker side. John O’Keeffe got the score of the day just before the halftime whistle as he powered his way out from the half back line to strike from 60 yards. John gave an inspired performance in defense, along with Gordon proving solid at 6, while Mark O’Connor once again showed how he’s been our most consistent player all year, leading the charge from full back. Darragh Jordan was getting his first start of the championship in goals and he also proved his worth, pulling off a brilliant save in the opening 10.
We had a dream start to the second half with Pa O’Neill fielding a high ball on the edge of the square and blasting to the net. Unfortunately for us, Knockainey would find the net at the other directly from our puck-out. We had to dig deep from then on as scores would be hard to come by playing into such a strong breeze. Our opponents weren’t making it easy on themselves though, as they hit a number of poor wides in the opening moments of the second half. Kevin Daly clipped a point to settle us that bit more and Pa O’Neill went on to add 5 more frees to his 5 scored in the first half. Knockainey managed to swing the advantage their way with 2 minutes remaining but for us to dig deep again and level it with time almost up. Pat Gleeson, a second half sub, won himself a free with the last play of the game. Hurley around the neck job. A free Pat has won multiple times before for Na Piarsaigh, starting all the way back at U12. The ref blew for full time following Pa O’Neill’s converted free.
Our quarter final is due to be played next weekend against Cappamore, with details still to be confirmed.
Team: Darragh Jordan, Adam Fitzsimons, Mark O’Connor, Conor Richardson, John O’Keeffe(0-01), Gordon Brown, Dean McLoughlin(0-01), Evan Gilvarry, Pádraig Heaney, Kevin Daly(0-01), Pa O’Neill(1-10, 0-10f), Jack McCarthy, Marcus Hogan(0-02), Keiran Daly, Pal McDonogh.

Junior C Hurling Championship Round 4
Na Piarsaigh 1-12
Patrickswell 0-04
Our Junior C’s had a good win last Friday evening in the club, making it 3 wins from 4 in the competition to date. The result cements our place in a quarter final with a game to spare. Garryspillane are our final group opponents although that tie is fixed for the 12th of October. This will more than likely be brought forward a couple of weeks. Fair play to Tom Quinn for all his efforts in getting 15+ players out on the pitch in each of the rounds so far this year. It’s wonderful to be able to field 4 adult teams over the space of a single weekend and Tom has done great work in bringing lads along this year. The offer of a few refreshments in the club bar after Friday’s game probably helped to get a few over the line. And we can assume they weren’t mi-wadies being consumed either.
Team: Podge Kennedy, Cathal Hassett, Derek Grimes, David Broderick, Christian Slater, Aidan Hennessy, Thomas Fitzgerald, Adam Long, Leon Power, James Naughton, Eoghan Keogh, Joseph Corcoran, Joe Buckley, Eddie O'Neill, Shane Downey.
Subs: Finbar Ryan, Billy O'Keeffe, Tom Quinn.
