Senior Hurling Championship Semi-Final

Na Piarsaigh 2-20
Kilmallock 1-17

A solid win for our senior hurlers in the county semi-final on Sunday afternoon and a place in the county final booked for Sunday the 19th of October. A windy afternoon in Bruff with the rain an ever present threat for the hour. We played with the aid of the elements in the opening half, scoring into the empty pitch and putt end. The pitch was in decent nick for this time of year and there was a nice atmosphere building around the ground. Bruff, always a fine setting for a championship match.

We raced into a 6-point lead inside the opening 5 minutes following a flurry of Na Piarsaigh scores. Adrian Breen pounced for a goal, capitalising on a long Ronan Lynch free that the keeper failed to deel with. Adrian reacted quickest on the loose ball and whipped to the net. Mike Casey would grab the resultant puck out and riffle it back over the bar. Adrian & Will Henn would score 2 more before Kilmallock registered their first from a placed ball. It was point for point for point for the next while as our opponents made the most of their first half purple patch, although not getting with 3 of our boys. With about 5 to play in the opening half, Adrian would grab his second goal. James Finn intercepted a wayward Kilmallock pass, and delivered a low ball in towards Adrian on the 21. The bounce of the ball deceived Adrian’s marker, with him gathering and heading for goal. He made no mistake with the finish. While Adrian was keeping the goals ticking over, Peter was proving to be a right handful for the rest of the Kilmallock defense. He ended the first half with 5 points to his name as well as setting up countless other scores and attacks. Daithí was also causing serious havoc for their backs, fielding a number of puck-outs in the opening 30. A great target for the Dow in goals. Half-time score: Na Piarsaigh 2-13 Kilmallock 0-09

Downesy whips his shot just wide in the second half on Sunday.

The second half proved a more tense affair as the conditions worsened. The breeze looked to have picked up and Kilmallock were making the most of it in the opening moments. They scored 4 unanswered points before Tommy Grimes, an early second half substitute, landed a serious score from a long distance out and close to the sideline. Kilmallock looked to be getting a decent footing in the game but that point certainly settled our nerves. Will Henn then popped over his second and Kevin Downes landed another free shortly after. Downesy was meticulous once again from placed balls, landing 5 frees along with a ‘65. While our forwards were the standout players in the first half, it was our backs who solidified the result in the second. Vince and Mike Casey weren’t giving the Kilmallock forwards a sniff of a goal chance while Emmet McEvoy came up with 2 crucial dispossessions when Kilmallock were bearing down on the Dow’s goal. Speaking of our goalie, rarely has Shane pucked as much ball in open play as he did in the second half on Sunday afternoon. On multiple occasions where our backs broke down the Kilmallock attack, Shane was sought out to start our build-up again. A composed and reassuring presence between the sticks. Keith Dempsey was introduced with about 5 to play and while he didn’t register a score, he did win 2 important frees. The second resulted in the perpetrator receiving his marching orders for a high tackle. Both placed balls were cooly dispatched by Downesy to close out the game. Kilmallock did raise a green flag in the dying moments but the game was spent at that stage.

The county final will be a repeat of last year’s clash, with Doon once again our opponents. They had a big win over Ballybrown on Sunday afternoon in Kilmallock and will no doubt come into the decider with good confidence. We’ve been ticking along nicely ourselves. The results have been good lately, but more importantly, the performances have been solid too. There were moments in the second half on Sunday where the lads really had to dig deep, and they did just that. We’ll need that same fight, and maybe a bit more, if we’re to depose Doon in this year's county final. I, for one, can’t wait.

U16 Hurling Championship Semi-Final

Na Piarsaigh 2-14
Monaleen 2-06

Our U16 hurlers booked their place in the County Final with a superb 2-14 to 2-6 win over a strong Monaleen side at Mick Neville Park on Saturday morning.

Playing against a stiff breeze in the first half, Na Piarsaigh battled hard to trail by just two at the break (1-5 to 1-3). With the wind at their backs, the lads took control in the second half — led by brilliant defensive work from Rian McHugh and a huge point from Sean O’Brien.

Shane Waters, Charlie Ryan, Ross O’Flanagan kept the scoreboard ticking, while Harry O’Sullivan chipped in with a fine score. Daniel O’Donovan grabbed a vital goal to seal the win.

A massive squad effort throughout the year where everyone played their part sees the lads through to face Murroe Boher in the County Final, details to follow.
The club encourages all members and supporters to come out and get behind this talented group of players. Well done to all players and coaches!

Intermediate Hurling Championship Semi-Final

Na Piarsaigh 0-15
Murroe Boher 3-18

Our intermediate hurlers season came to an end in Cappamore on Saturday evening following their 12-point defeat to Murroe Boher. In a game that was played in highly challenging conditions, our lads left every bit of themselves on the pitch for the 60 minutes. Playing with a strong breeze in the opening half, we entered the break 3-points to the good, 0-12 to 1-06. Marcus Hogan chipped in with 2-points while Pa O’Neill got 6, of which 5 were placed balls. Kevin Daly was doing trojan work in the half forward line while John O’Keeffe was breaking up a lot of Murroe Boher’s attack at the back.

Our opponents burst out the blocks in the second half, scoring 6 unanswered points. Pa landed a free to ease things somewhat but Murroe Boher were not for stopping. They would hit us for a flurry of points and two more goals, running out comprehensive winners on the day.

A note on some of our standout performers this championship. Mark O’Connor has had an excellent campaign. He’s been solid and assured at full back, always reliable. Darragh Jordan has lined out between the sticks for the last 3 games, and hasn’t blinked once. His puck outs have provided a great starting base for our lads and he’s been unwavering under the high balls as well. The pick of the bunch though, must be Eoin Brosnan. Brossie will undoubtedly come into Shane O’Neill’s thinking over the coming 2 weeks as we build for a county senior final. He’s been outstanding throughout this year’s intermediate campaign, playing with a great maturity well beyond his years. There’s a bit of a swagger about him as well, he’ll throw the shackles off and hurl. You love to see it.

Fair play to James Ryan and his management team or Emmet Beston, Joe Heaney and Austin Ryan on a positive year for our intermediate hurlers. While it ended in defeat at the semi-final stage, there’s still progress. The team lost a lot of experience in the off-season with some retirements and there were more lads promoted to the senior ranks throughout the campaign. All that said, the team has moved forward and will continue to do so next season with the addition of more youth from the minor ranks. Onwards and upwards.

Team: Darragh Jordan, John O’Keeffe, Mark O’Connor, Padraig Heaney, Evan Gilvarry, Gordon Brown, Dean McLoughlin, Eoin Brosnan(0-01), Jack McCarthy(0-01), Kevin Daly(0-01), Evan Sweeney, Paul McDonogh, Marcus Hogan(0-03), Kieran Daly(0-01), Pa O’Neill (0-08, 0-06f, 1'65).
Subs: Pat Gleeson, Ronan Benson, Harry McGann, Louis Murphy, Josh Sheehan.

Junior B Hurling Championship Quarter-Final

Na Piarsaigh 0-11
Doon 2-07

Our Junior B hurlers came up just short of Doon in the county quarter-final on Sunday morning in Meanus. Certainly a game that was there for the taking, missed chances cost us in the end. It was without doubt another positive year for our junior B’s, having gotten to the knock-out stages of the county championship for the first time since 2021. Management of Brian Buckley, Tom Quinn Jnr, Mike Keneally and Cian Doherty must be pleased with the progress and enthused about the years ahead(we are).

Speaking as manager of the team, I would like to pay tribute to Tom, Mike and Cian for their unwavering support throughout the season. They were all incredibly committed and all understood the unique challenges of managing a Junior B team. Challenge number 1, trying to get the same team on the pitch two weeks in a row. But also, a word on the players. We had a core group of committed lads this year that were an absolute pleasure to manage. Some lads returned from retirement, Josh O’Halloran to name but one. And a few more minors and U20’s made the successful jump to adult hurling. We also had Podge Kennedy score a handful of frees. Something he wasn’t allowed to do in his almost 15 years of playing senior. Anyway, the year ends with a loss but as do most years, for the majority of teams. A loss but certainly not out. We’ll battle on into 2026.

Team: Podge Kennedy(0-01f), Mike Duggan, Kevin McNamara, Cian Brosnan, Tadhg Mullane, Cathal McMullen, Christy O'Hagan, Donal Ó Conaill, Josh O'Halloran, Dillon Skehan(0-01f), Gordon Leonard(0-04, 0-03f 1’65), Eoghain Sherlock(0-02), Ger O'Tiarnaigh, John O'Tiarnaigh(0-02), Ben O'Regan(0-01f).
Subs: Brian Hartnett, Sean Harrington, Steven Mitchell.
